Why are Gender and LGBTQ+ Community asked this way?

There are many ways to ask this question. We have consistently asked these questions using the guidance of the Human Rights Commission. Our gender question follows this formulation:

What best describes your gender?

  • Woman
  • Man
  • Non-binary
  • I use another term

Our LGBTQ+ Community question follows this formulation:

Do you consider yourself a member of the LGBTQ+ community?

  • Yes
  • No
  • No, but I identify as an Ally (personal supporter of my LGTBQ+ colleagues)
  • Prefer not to say

These two questions suffice for most small or midsize organizations. In these organizations, more specific questions about sexual orientation or transgender status can feel invasive. In large, global organizations it may make more sense to evaluate the size of your employee population with regard to transgender, non-binary, or specific sexual orientations if you can offer anonymity and are committed to taking action to address the unique needs of these employee segments.
