Summary

This 2019 report from the CIPD, a UK-based HR professional body, summarizes the evidence to collect in order to understand your D&I challenges and implement effective solutions. The CIPD emphasizes that there is not a definitive best practice to increase workforce diversity because each company has a unique business context. The report is the result of input from senior D&I professionals on six areas of challenges and opportunities:

  • Context: taking into account global and local-level issues
  • Gaining buy-in and commitment to D&I
  • Collecting People Data
  • Diversity Training Programs
  • Inclusive Talent Management versus "fit"
  • Positive Action (distinguished from affirmative action and positive discrimination)

The key to progress is to bring all these elements together into a holistic strategy and to recognize that isolated initiatives won't make workplaces more diverse. People data is the critical element required to diagnose workplace issues and guide action.
